Herlwyn Park Recreation Ground and railway banks
Borough: Hillingdon
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: No public access
Area: 7.63 ha

Description

This park comprises rugby pitches used by Ruislip RFC, partially divided by an important line of trees. The site also includes adjacent, inaccessible, railway banks.

Wildlife

The line of trees in the park includes old and twisted pedunculate oaks, which were pollarded in the past. These provide extremely valuable habitats for insects living in dead and decaying wood.An outgrown hedgerow of mainly hornbeam trees marks the eastern boundary of the site. The localised hoverfly Didea fasciata occurs here. Along the southern edge is a large vegetated mound with elm forming a dense thicket.
