Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Stanmore Marsh
Borough: Harrow
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 4.54 ha

Description

Much of Stanmore Marsh is formally managed, however there are also areas that are much more interesting from a natural perspective. These include wetlands and a brook, as well as some woodland.

Wildlife

The wetlands include seasonally flooded woodland and scrub, and several ponds. These contain water horsetail, a scarce plant in London. The Edgware Brook runs through the southern part of the site and contains good quantities of curled pondweed. The woodland at the top of the site contains early dog-violet, an indicator of ancient woodland. A number of nationally uncommon insects have recently been recorded on the site.
