Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Bonnersfield Lane
Borough: Harrow
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.34 ha

Description

Bonnersfield Lane is an ancient trackway, and appears in both the Domesday Book and on Rocque’s Map, as well as being the location of a Civil War skirmish. This attractive and popular site provides access to nature in an area lacking accessible wildlife sites.

Wildlife

The area's long history is reflected in the presence of numerous large oaks (including one particularly noble veteran specimen), ashes and field maples. These contain much standing dead wood, providing habitat for fungi, invertebrates and hole-nesting birds. All three British woodpeckers have been recorded here, and tawny owls are heard regularly in the lane, as are foxes and muntjac deer. Bonnersfield Lane is the only known site in the borough for shining crane's-bill. It has a high quality insect fauna, including some nationally uncommon species.
