Description
Wildlife
The copse in the north-west of Woodlands Open includes dense scrub and elm thicket, which likely provides valuable shelter for birds and mammals and is home to a diverse insect fauna. Despite quite high levels of disturbance it is a useful habitat to the local area. A footpath runs west from the copse, alongside Melrose Allotments and this provides a sheltered environment amongst trees and shrubs, and connects the copse to the allotment site, itself a well-sheltered site with a range of trees, shrubs and ruderal features on and around its margins. Running from the east end of the footpath to Marsh Road is a long and very broad roadside strip with a mixed vegetation structure and a diverse insect population, including a range of solitary bees and wasps. Dominant vegetation includes bramble, elm, dog-rose, teasel, blackthorn and bittersweet.Facilities
