Sayes Court Park
Borough: Lewisham
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.89 ha

Description

Sayes Court Park is an attractive small park with plenty of mature trees, including an ancient black mulberry.

Wildlife

Among the many fine mature trees are examples of London plane, horse-chestnut and hybrid black poplar. Of greatest note is a large black mulberry tree near the site's southern entrance, believed to be more than 250 years old. A variety of exotic shrubs have been planted on the perimeter. These are particularly dense and provide common birds with shelter and foraging opportunities. Sayes Court's grassland is especially interesting. Although dominated by perennial rye-grass, there are a high proportion of wildflowers; some indicating the underlying soil is slightly acidic, including cat's-ear, lady's bedstraw and buck's-horn plantain.
