Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

West Wood Recreation Ground
Borough: Redbridge
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 3.37 ha

Description

The main nature conservation interest of this small park is the lake, which is actually part of the Seven Kings Water. The rest of the park has considerable potential for ecological improvement, and there have been a number of enhancements. A mixed native hedge has been planted around the perimeter, and the mowing regime has been relaxed beside the Seven Kings Water.

Wildlife

The lake has a little marginal vegetation, including great yellow-cress, purple loosestrife, branched bur-reed, great willowherb and rushes. It supports a range of common waterfowl, including great crested grebe, mallard and moorhen, and dragonflies such as the southern hawker.
