Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Fairfoot Wood
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (part of site)
Area: 0.57 ha

Description

This site, between the western end of Fairfoot Road and the railway to the north, comprises the extreme western limit of a former railway link. From 1850, the link enabled trains out of Fenchurch Street to run on to the North London Railway via Old Ford and Victoria Park. Access is via a short set of steps leading up to a plateau.

Wildlife

Most of the site is covered in dense woodland dominated by sycamore, but recent thinning and planting of native trees by the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park will diversity the canopy and shrub layer. A large area of the invasive Japanese knotweed has been cleared, along with much of the bramble which dominated the ground flora. A range of woodland wildflowers has been planted. The more open, eastern end supports species-poor grassland with scattered trees, of which tree of heaven is the most numerous. Other trees include sugar maple, wild cherry and one oak. Attempts are being made to diversify the grassland with wildflower and bulb planting.
