Description

This small ancient woodland is dominated by tall oak and coppiced hornbeam trees. Ainslie Wood is a Local Nature Reserve, managed by the London Wildlife Trust. There is access into the site via Royston Avenue, Woodside Gardens and Underwood Road.

Wildlife

The understorey of the wood has an abundance of the locally uncommon wild service-tree, usually indicative of ancient woodland. Other trees and shrubs include field maple, hazel, Midland hawthorn and crab apple. The ground flora is relatively rich and includes abundant bluebell, together with dog's-mercury, wood anemone, wood millet, remote sedge and ramsons. A number of birds frequent the site, including green woodpecker, jay, chiffchaff and mistle thrush.
