Description

Lammas Park is an interesting site containing three main areas of wildlife habitat. Lammas Park is used for nature study by groups of small children.

Wildlife

At Lammas enclosure, an abandoned tennis court is developing some interesting wildlife habitat. The land is surrounded by scrub and some scattered shrubs occur in the centre. Most of this area has been colonised by wildflowers. This makes excellent habitat for invertebrates. There are many colourful plants here including several Michaelmas daisies, rosebay willowherb, smooth hawk's-beard, herb-Robert, oxeye daisy, purple toadflax, bristly oxtongue, common ragwort, white clover and many more. In the south of Lammas Enclosure an area of rough vegetation has been managed for nature conservation for several years. The vegetation has also developed in an area formerly used for tennis and is now a mix of rough grassland and scrub providing good bird and invertebrate habitat. Also included in the site is the meadow immediately to the west, at an earlier stage of succession - therefore providing subtly different niches for wildlife. The third area of habitat is the 'nature area' in Lammas Park with a very small pond and a few planted native and exotic shrubs.
