Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Gilmore Road Triangle
Borough: Lewisham
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.78 ha

Description

This small open space, on the edge of Lewisham town centre, contains many mature trees and a number of woodland copses of native and non-native tree species.

Wildlife

The site is especially abundant in field maple, but also boasts fine examples of sycamore, ash, pedunculate oak, willows, lime and poplars. Of particular interest are a number of old pear trees along the northwest of the site. Also present are numerous cherry plum. These are perhaps the remnants of an old orchard, understandably an uncommon habitat in central London. Old fruit trees can support specialist invertebrates. There are areas of scrub comprising hawthorn, spindle, dogwood and elder. This site will undoubtedly be attractive to small birds in providing nesting sites and opportunities to forage.
